Watermarks by D. I. R. T. Studio
Developed by D.I.R.T Studio as a design enhancement to the Four Mile Run Restoration project, the seventeen Watermarks planned for the stream’s Arlington side are intended to bring attention to stormwater outfalls which contribute to the stream flow. Each blue Watermark will be situated perpendicular to the asphalt pedestrian/cyclist pathway, rendering these underground culverts symbolically visible to users of the Four Mile Run trail. Marking these manmade diversions to naturally occurring tributaries highlights the need for continued environmental stewardship and awareness, in support of restoration efforts planned for the Four Mile Run stream. The development of Watermarks was part of a larger design study for the Four Mile Run stream which was funded in part by a National Endowment for the Arts’ Access to Artistic Excellence – Design grant.
